S.Korea Launches Startup Special Visa to Attract Global Entrepreneurs

sungho-choo - 2024 November 8

The Korean government has introduced the Startup Korea Special Visa, a new initiative aimed at attracting foreign entrepreneurs and innovative startups to the country. The program, which officially opened for applications, marks a significant step in Korea’s efforts to enhance its global startup ecosystem.

The new visa program was jointly developed by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) and the Ministry of Justice, following their initial announcement at the Global Startup Center opening ceremony in July. The initiative has now been formally institutionalized with comprehensive operational guidelines.

In a notable departure from the existing Technological Startup (D-8-4) visa, the new special visa program features streamlined requirements that prioritize qualitative assessment over quantitative criteria. Under the new system, the MSS evaluates candidates based on their business potential and innovative capabilities before making recommendations. The Ministry of Justice then conducts final reviews in accordance with immigration laws before issuing visas.

The application process for the Startup Korea Special Visa recommendations is currently open, with a deadline set for November 20th. Interested entrepreneurs can submit their applications at this site.
